Born in Paisley, Yvonne Paterson began studying the flute with Sheena Gordon, at the Music School of Douglas Academy. In 2006 she graduated with a First Class Honours Degree from the Royal College of Music where she studied flute with Simon Channing and Paul-Edmund Davies and piccolo with Stewart McIlwham. She recently completed her Masters with Distinction on a full scholarship at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama studying with Alison Mitchell and Janet Richardson.
As a freelance musician, Yvonne has performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. She has played guest principal for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra with whom she has also recorded and performed live for BBC Radio 3 and BBC4. For many years, Yvonne was also principal flute in both the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and Camerata Scotland, taking her on tours to Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
As a soloist, Yvonne has performed in recitals around the UK and concerto performances include Mozart Flute Concerto in G with the RSAMD Chamber Orchestra and the Cambrian Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2008, she gave the Scottish premiere of Marco Putz’s Flute Concerto with Glasgow Wind Band in the prestigious BASBWE Festival and returned in 2009 for a further performance.
Yvonne is a keen chamber musician and works regularly in a duo with Scott Mitchell (piano) and with Andrew Robinson (guitar). She is a founding member of her flute quartet “Flutes en Route” which was accepted onto the Live Music Now Scheme and won the RSAMD Governors’ Chamber Music Prize in their first year. Yvonne has also played solo flute with pop group “McFly” on numerous television shows and their 2005 Wonderland Arena tour.
Competition and Scholarship successes include being a finalist in the 2009 Royal Over Seas League Wind, Brass and Percussion section, 2nd prize in the 2008 “Performing Australian Music Competition”, the RSAMD Governors’ Chamber Music Prize, the John McGregor Flute Prize for outstanding achievement, winner of the 2008 RSAMD Classical Concerto Competition, “Highly Commended” in the RSAMD Wind Governors’ Recital Competition, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award, Dewar Arts Awards, the Earl of Dalhousie Award, the EMI Music Sound Foundation Award and the Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarship to travel to New York for lessons with Robert Dick.
